How to: Define Life Goals and Dreams

“People with goals succeed because they know where they are going… It’s as simple as that.”
Earl Nightingale

There is no standard definition for a successful life but the journey to success starts with knowing the end-goal. Everyone’s definition of success will vary based on the fact that their end-goals, known as ‘Life Goals’ will differ. Most people have never taken any real time out to actually define ‘Life Goals’ and they just achieve things in life based on chance events or life consequence.

There is a costs for NOT defining Life Goals!
Not defining your dreams or Life Goals can be costly. Without end-goals to work towards will mean that you are living life without any clear direction or focus. Everyone needs to feel as though they are progressing in life in some way. Without focus or direction, frustration and stress can often occur resulting in mild forms of depression. Everyone has heard of the classic ‘Mid-life crisis‘! I’m sure you do not want to be one of those people who look at their life and realise they have not achieved all that they wanted to and feel that time is running out. Do not let anxiety and frustration set in causing you to start making irrational unplanned decisions. There is no need for any of this, all that is required is a little thought and success with fulfillment will follow.

“If you can dream it, you can do it” – Walt Disney

Defining your ‘Life Goals’
The first stage of the ‘Ambition to Succeed’ system is the ‘Life-Goal Star’. See picture below.
The ‘A2S: Life-Goal Star‘ (LGS) has six ‘Primary Life Points’ (PLP) each point representing a different life category.
Each PLP is made up of two elements known as ‘Primary Life Point Elements’ (PLPE)

Life Goal Star - A2S:LGS

There a number of reasons why the star shape is used;
i) It allows you to easily categorize each your ‘Life Goals’
ii) A star illustrates that all points are of equal value for a successful life. No PLP has priority over another.
iii) Once defined it is easy to see if your ‘Life Goals’ will result in a balanced life by not overloading a specific PLP

Using the LGS
Step 1: Preparation
Either print out the template (Click here to download) or on a piece of A4 paper list all the PLPEs

Step Two: Isolation
Find somewhere silent where you will not be disturbed for at least the next 30 minutes.

Step Three: Visualize
Relax, close your eyes and imagine yourself 15 years from now living your perfect life. Visualize yourself… what do you look like, where you are living, who is in your life, how much money do you have, what job do you do, what you have achieved and so on.

Step Four: Document
Fill out the PLPE list by write down your visualizations or ‘Life-Goal’ targets. Try and write two Life Goals for each PLPE

There you go, its as simple as that, you now have your ‘Life-Goals’. It didn’t take that long nor a lot of effort, that is the beauty of this system.

The next stage of the ‘A2S:System’ is to create ‘Success Journey Tasks’ that will allow you to achieve these ‘Life Goals.’

Please note: we do suggest that before moving onto ‘Success Journey Tasks’ you redo steps 1 to 4 a few times to really get really valid ‘Life Goals’ that you are serious about achieving. By doing this you can also work on creating a balanced LGS and a strengthen the visualiztion of what success looks like to you
